Can I take part in an LTSB programme and still be eligible for universal credit?

Please inform your work coach if you are offered a place on an LTSB programme, but yes, in principle you should be able to take part and still receive your Universal Credit benefit.

Can I take part in the programme even though I am still at university?

No, you cannot take part in our programme if you are still in full-time education.

However, if our programme runs in between academic years (i.e. during the summer holidays) and you are definitely not going to return to university after the summer, then we may consider an application – but you must explain this clearly in your application.

Can I take part in the programme if I am working full-time?

No, you cannot take part in our programmes if you are working full-time as you won’t be able to commit to our timetable. Our programme is there to help you prepare for the world of work.

Can I take part in the programme if I am working part-time?

Some of our programmes will be able to cater for a young person who works part-time. We advise you to apply for the programme you are interested in, state in your application that you work part time and your hours/days you work. If you are invited to an interview, we can then discuss this and how it could work for you.

Do I have to have minimum grades to take part in an LTSB programme?

This depends on which programme you want to apply for. You can find information on grade requirements on the programme page you are interested in.

I do not live in the area that you run your programme? Can I still apply if I am looking to moving in the near future?

One of the criteria for our programmes is that you must live in the area where our programme is based. If you are planning to relocate, please feel free to apply for one of our programmes once you have moved.

I am over the below/above the age range to take part in an LTSB programme? Can you still help me into employment?

Our programmes are specifically for young people aged between 18 – 24 and some programmes 16 – 24. Please see our additional support page which has a range of other services that may be able to help you on your journey into employment.

Can I apply for more than one LTSB programme?

You may only apply for one programme at a time. If you have an interest in more than one programme please state this in your application. If you are invited to interview stage we can have this discussion and talk through which programme would be the right fit for you.

I've got one or more criminal convictions. Can you still help me?

We need more information to answer this question. Please make sure that you include this in your application. The more information we have the better we can assess if the programme would be right for you.

Is there support for people with disabilities on your programme?

We make every effort to enable any young person to join our programmes, whatever your physical ability. I have no qualifications / never had a job before. Does that matter?

We have different programmes that are suitable for different young people. You can find out if qualifications are needed for the programme you are interested in by clicking on the programme.

I have a friend who I think would be interested in applying, who do I speak to about this?

That’s great! Ask your friend to apply and make sure they click the friend/family member option when asked where they heard about LTSB.

If you have already taken part in an LTSB programme and you want to refer a friend also make sure you let your Careers Development Manager know so we can keep an eye out for their application.

Programme FAQs

How long do LTSB programmes run for?

Our LTSB programmes are between 3 and 12 weeks long. Some are part-time, others are full-time, and all are tailored to give you the training and skills to succeed in your chosen career. You can find details of the programme you are interested in on the programme page.

What time does the programme start and finish each day?

Our programmes usually start between 9:30am – 10:00am each day and you should expect a typical day to run till 4:00pm – 4:30pm. This information will be given to you in our welcome packs that are sent to you before the programme starts.

When does the next programme run in my area?

Is there a cost to take part in the programme?

No, you do not have to pay to take part in an LTSB programme. However, costs such as travel to venues any lunch/refreshments you may want to buy would be your responsibility while on the programme. If you think this could be an issue, we do not want finance to be a barrier so please get in touch with us directly to discuss further applications@leadershipthoughsport.org

Will I be paid while on the programme?

No, our programmes are unpaid. LTSB programmes are tailored to help prepare you for the world of work. Our dedicated Careers team will aim to place you into paid employment with our fantastic employers with once our programme has finished.

Do you cover travel costs?

LTSB does not usually cover travel costs to and from our programme. If you think this could be an issue, we do not want finance to be a barrier so please get in touch with us directly to discuss further applications@ltsb.charity

Will I get a qualification for completing your programme?

You will not receive a qualification for completing our programme, however some programmes we offer are in partnership with education providers. It is our education providers who provide the qualification, not LTSB.

What will I be doing during my time on the LTSB programme?

All our programmes are tailored to give you the training and skills to succeed in your chosen career. We do this by delivering interview coaching, CV workshops, critical thinking, communications, debating and presentation skills which are all facilitated by experienced LTSB Careers Development Managers (CDMs). We also include insight events and Q&A with leading companies, business professionals, and previous LTSB apprentices (our alumni).

What happens if I get a job during the programme?

Fantastic! We just ask that you keep us up to date and let us know for our records.

What should I wear on the programme?

Your Careers Development manager will share this information with you before programme starts and let you know how you should present yourself before specific sessions. Some of our sessions online won’t require you to wear office attire, however most venues/offices we visit we expect you to wear office attire/smart clothing.

Apprenticeship FAQs

What salary can I expect?

Our programmes with NatWest have salaries for each apprenticeship position available to view on our programme pages. For all other programmes, salaries will depend on the employer we place you with.

Am I guaranteed a role once I've completed an LTSB programme?

LTSB can guarantee you an interview with an employer once you have completed our programme. We cannot guarantee you a role as it’s up to you to ace the interview, but we will support you every step of the way!

What happens when I have completed an LTSB programme?

Once you have completed your programme, LTSB provide you with interview opportunities with specially selected employers offering apprenticeships or other full-time roles. We work hard to provide our apprentices with outstanding placements at major firms that offer a quality apprenticeship experience and also the opportunity of working for these organisations on a permanent basis at the end of the placement.

Once you are placed, LTSB continues to provide pastoral support for 6 – 12 months (depending on the role and employer). Your dedicated CDM will work with you to ensure you settle successfully into your career, and that your employer is also supported. We are not just committed to securing you with a job, but a career. LTSB work with employers that pay living wage and offer continued professional development and opportunities after you are placed into work.
