Reiss’s Story

Reiss took part in LTSB’s inaugural Glasgow Business Programme in 2025 and has now started his career. Ciaran McGugan is LTSB’s Regional Programme & Partnership Manager (Scotland). He worked closely with Reiss on the Programme and has shared Reiss’s journey.

My first interaction with Reiss followed an online application he had submitted while he was at college nearing the end of his HNC and HND. Although he had achieved strong academic qualifications, he had not yet gained work experience or developed the employability skills, language, and career direction he needed to move into work.

Reiss gained a place and became a real leader on the programme. We bring together young people with a wide range of experiences, academic achievements, and backgrounds, so it’s important to have participants who are willing to lead and help others grow. For Reiss, this was less evident on day one, but that quickly changed as his commitment increased. Like many young people, he initially seemed to be going through the motions and seeing the programme as a means to an end or something encouraged by others. From week two onwards however, it was clear he was fully invested. He not only thrived himself but also helped others do the same.

Breaking down barriers for Reiss came from being relatable, honest, and clear. Moving on from academia, where the focus is often on grades, coursework, and a less defined progression route, can make it difficult for young people to trust and understand the support available to them. I was direct with Reiss, set him challenges to support others, and was honest about any areas to work on. I believe this helped build a strong relationship, strengthened his belief in the process, and gave him the confidence to grow personally and professionally.

The biggest accolade Reiss received was being voted Young People’s Champion by his peers, in recognition not only of his own growth but, more importantly, of his supportive nature and openness.

Reiss’ growth was clear to see, and many months later it is still evident in the role he secured through the programme, where he has remained humble and true to the purpose of the programme. That represents a real lifestyle change: maintaining, sustaining, and thriving in a role that will open up many future opportunities for him.
