Jahnay’s Story: From Uncertainty to Stability in Banking

Jahnay began working in retail at just 16, taking on responsibility early in life while balancing school and caring for her mother. By 18, she had moved out and was determined to build a more stable future for herself.

Although she had studied Health and Social Care in college, the impact of COVID-19 led her back into retail, where she found herself unsure about her long-term direction and searching for a pathway into a more secure career.

Searching for Direction and Stability

Jahnay knew she wanted a stable office job and a routine she could rely on, but finding a clear route into professional work felt overwhelming. Living with social anxiety made stepping outside her comfort zone particularly challenging, and she struggled to see how she could break into a new industry.

While exploring apprenticeship opportunities through the Job Centre, Jahnay was referred to LTSB. At first she wasn’t sure what the programme involved, but after researching and meeting her Programme Manager, she began to see the potential it offered.

Building Confidence and Overcoming Self-Doubt

Starting the LTSB bootcamp was a big step for Jahnay. Like many young people on the programme, she initially experienced imposter syndrome and doubted whether she belonged.

Through training, feedback and encouragement, she gradually built confidence in her communication skills, learning how to network, engage in small talk and present to others. The teamwork and critical thinking exercises helped her step outside her comfort zone and realise her capabilities.

The bootcamp became a turning point, giving her the preparation and belief she needed to succeed in professional interviews and workplace environments.

Breaking into Banking

Jahnay’s journey into NatWest was not without setbacks. After her first interview, she was unsuccessful, but with continued support and feedback she secured a second opportunity and was successful in gaining an apprenticeship.

Adjusting to a nine-to-five role and learning the language of banking was a steep learning curve, but with support from colleagues and the apprenticeship programme, she quickly began to thrive.

Today, Jahnay works in Credit Delivery at NatWest, writing reports on business creditworthiness and building valuable industry knowledge. She has also become an Apprentice Ambassador, supporting and encouraging new apprentices as they begin their own journeys.

Looking Ahead

Jahnay is proud of the stability and opportunities her role has given her and is excited about building a long-term career in relationship management. For her, the practical, hands-on learning of an apprenticeship was the right path and has opened doors she once felt were out of reach.

Reflecting on her journey, Jahnay credits LTSB with helping her realise her potential and giving her the confidence to succeed.

She shares her appreciation for the support, resources and opportunities she received, and the lasting impact the programme has had on her future.
