Our annual Mock Trial is one of the highlights of the LTSB calendar; a unique occasion where our young people step away from the day job to go on a fast track insight into the criminal justice system…while developing some core professional skills.

Last Thursday we had the honour of holding the trail in Court Two of The Old Bailey – a truly iconic venue which has seen some of the UK’s most notorious criminals be tried (think the Krays, Jack the Ripper, the Soham murderers…).

Our Young Leaders were presented with a case in the morning and given a brief introduction to ‘how trials work’, before then preparing their roles to perform in a real courtroom under the formidable eye of our trustee, Judge Peter Lodder QC. They were taught how to avoid ‘leading questions’, while managing to get key evidence out of their witness. It was a steep learning curve, but one that they embraced with energy and enthusiasm.

The 2018 Intake put on an absolutely incredible performance, demonstrating their ability to speak in public (in one of the most intimidating locations in London!), think on the spot, consider complex evidence and understand how to use the power of language to extract the truth from a witness.

We would like to thank White & Case for hosting the preparation during the day, and the City of London Corporation for lending use of the Old Bailey and Sheriffs Green and Keaveny for attending and welcoming us to the Courts. A thanks also to all supporters, trustees and funders who were able to attend and watch our outstanding Young Leaders!
